DivX Stage6 is a place for people who love video. It's a high-quality platform that lets anyone upload, download, view, share and experience everything from short clips captured on mobile phones all the way up to full-length, high-definition feature films. Anyone can become a publisher, anyone can build an audience and every video available on Stage6 is compatible with over 70 million consumer electronics devices from every major manufacturer, making it easy to play back Stage6 videos on your television or portable device.
That's a functional description of what the service offers. But Stage6 is also something else. It's an experiment. Like all experiments, it exists to test assumptions and answer questions. In this case, those questions are about the future of media. How do new technologies and platforms re-shape the content experience? Instead of just making things different, can digital media actually make things better? Is it possible for a video site to offer more than dogs on skateboards?
We think the answer, to that last question at least, is yes. More generally, we believe that digital media offers great promise for both content creators and consumers, and we want to do our part to help make sure the full breadth of that promise is realized. Digital tools and technologies have made the creation of content easier, cheaper and faster than ever before; anyone can become a filmmaker, and thanks to the Internet, anyone can share their content with the world.
But we believe that filmmakers can use the power of the Internet to do more than just "distribute" their work. We want to offer a platform that, ultimately, helps match the right audience to the right content, that lets filmmakers build and interact with communities of people, thereby deepening and transforming the content itself. We believe that consumers can do more than just 'consume' content in a digital age, that the act of viewing a piece of content is deepened by active participation. So that's part of what we're trying to get at with Stage6. It's an evolving space, as you'll no doubt discover, and we expect to get plenty of things wrong over time. We also hope to get some things right, and there are a few principles that will guide everything we do on the site:
