My friend recommends the Rick Steves guidebooks. He used the Paris one on a recent trip. Seems like there's a lot of free information on the site as well.

Quoted: Planning tips to help maximize your time and money spent in Europe.

Quoted: Luc Besson, the director reviled by some fellow citizens for Paris-goes-to-Hollywood action films such as "La Femme Nikita," "The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc," and "The Fifth Element," has entered the lucrative market of digital animation... Already a hit in Europe, "Arthur" signals an important milestone in French animation: with a reported $80-million price tag, it's the first big-budget French export vying to compete with American animated features.

I find it hard to have a conversation for 5 minutes with anyone this uninterested in the world outside of the U.S. There are definitely two Americas and Palin represents the worst of the one that the rest of the world knows us by. And we wonder why they hate us.

Quoted: For Europeans ... the turning point probably came with the appearance on the Katie Couric show when Palin confessed to not having had a passport until 2006. Europeans are appalled at the thought that someone who wants to be vice president of the most powerful nation on earth had so little interest in the rest of a world which is so vitally affected by the decisions of the man, or woman, in the White House.

It's impossible to remain indifferent to the controlled ferocity of Haneke's films. An in-depth article on the director from the Times with a slide-show commentary.

Quoted: "I like to show my students ‘Triumph of the Will,’ by Leni Riefenstahl, then something by Sergei Eisenstein — ‘Battleship Potemkin,’ for example — and then ‘Air Force One,’ the movie in which Harrison Ford plays the U.S. president. Each of these films has a distinct political agenda, but all make use of exactly the same techniques, all have a common goal — the total manipulation of the viewer. What’s terrible about the Harrison Ford film, though, especially terrible, is that it represents itself as simple entertainment."
