This is the app I downloaded to my Android G1 phone. Works great and recognizes URLs and SMS messages as well as text blocks.

I don't think MS tag will go anywhere.

The comparison to QR code is bogus. Data density is not much higher - and the need for color kills many applications (like photo-copying something with a tag on it).

Note the comparison of a QR code with 100's of bytes of data with a Tag with only 10 bytes in it.

Note that MS's codes must comunicate with a (SINGLE) MS service to lookup the actual stored value of the tag. So - not offline use of codes either.

Quoted: Find everything you need to evaluate and use Microsoft Tag 2D mobile tagging barcodes.

QR Codes are in wide use in Japan - cell phones incorporate QR Code scanners that can read the codes and direct the user to a web page automatically.

This is a great way to link the physical to the online world. There are so many possible applications:

- Retrieve information about a place or thing
- Report something about a physical place or thing (this public bathroom is in need of service).
- Complete a purchase (buy me)
- Confirm my location (security guard was here)

I wonder if I can get a QR decoder for my Blackberry!
