Winged Migration has some boring moments, there are so much you can do with birds flying, but there are amazing shots of the vast ecosystems on earth, from the desert to the artic.

We saw a flock of these "crater birds" flying above the Fern Grotto on Kauai. They are striking because of their very long slender tail feathers, their pure-white coloring, and their swooping/gliding flight. They also were making staccato chirping sounds.

I will be in this exact region in a few days -- looks like I won't be eating chicken. On a related note, I went to a travel medicine clinic yesterday to get immunized. The doctor gave me tons of health-related information about India but neglected to mention the bird flu outbreak. Their databases don't get updated as fast as they should.

Quoted: India's battle against its worst-ever outbreak of bird flu suffered a new blow Thursday as rain forced a halt to culling in West Bengal, an official said.

Quoted: Snowball is a medium sulphur crested Eleanora cockatoo and he loves to dance and sing. He loves the Back Street Boys. No one taught Snowball to dance...he just heard this song and suddenly felt like dancing. We're all jealous because he can outdance each one of us...nobody likes a show off! When he's really in the mood, he dances and sings. And at the end of the performance he takes a bow or two or twenty!! Enjoy the show.

All you ever wanted to know about duck dicks...

"Some ducks grow phalluses as long as their entire body. In the fall, the genitalia will disappear, only to reappear next spring."

But, wait, it gets better:

"To test her hypothesis, Dr. Brennan plans to team up with a biomechanics expert to build a transparent model of a female duck. She wants to see exactly what a duck phallus does during mating."

Inflatable love ducks?

Amazing! How it manages to mimic photo-shutters and chainsaws(!) is simply beyond me.
