Great paper. You have to pay $7 for it, but it is worth it. It is largely applicable to someone creating an online web-based business with the following caveats:

a) In the online world, once you've made your business case, the actual product development phase is iterative and agile -- where feedback from customers flows into the next iteration.

b) If time to market is critical (e.g. in a startup with limited runway), I still think you should give attention to nearly everything this paper highlights. But, the amount of attention given to each step may vary.

Quoted: Put in simple terms, if a company uncovers what customers want, designs a product that meets those needs, and is able to build and distribute it an an acceptable cost, the company will succeed - although there are innumerable was in which the simple formula can fail. This note will address the issues of product development broadly and suggest how to improve the probability of a project's success.
