i think it's true that you have to cultivate an appreciation for the outdoors in kids- they should get opportunities to hike, bike, kayak and develop a love of being outside. i also think it's true that we have to connect the "environment" to more than just these far away treks in nature - it's also about urban parks, water we drink and our health.

oh, and the title of this one is just for you Ben :-)

Quoted: Getting kids awed by nature, in all its slug-infested glory, is as important as getting them reading.

One of the lesser known I-90 trails.

Quoted: Otter Falls is stunning. Truly breathtaking. A place which must be seen in person to be truly appreciated. Photos and flowery descriptions do very little for this place.

This has been my experience this season so far, as well.

Quoted: The volume of snow makes the descent to the lake extremely difficult and Seattlest wasn’t interested in becoming another Snow Lake fatality. Normally hikers drop several hundred feet down to the shores, but this summer that won’t be reasonably safe for at least another month

Sounds like a good trip...and not just because of the name. Ha.

Quoted: Phelps Creek Trail follows an old logging road but soon enters Glacier Peak Wilderness (1 mile). The forest grows older and larger and edible mushrooms ...

Thinking about heading up to the Cedar River Watershed and hiking up to Rattlesnake Ledge. The Education Center is open tomorrow from 10 to 5.

A really cool public art project - "rain drums" is on site:

oooh I really want to do this hike, but doubt i'll get a chance in the next three weeks :( The rest of you should definitely check it out...a bit challenging, but apparently really beautiful, with waterfall, woods, and mountains!
