what in the world?

the story isn't particularly interesting. what really fascinates me is the terrible picture. what kind of picture is that?

Quoted: No runner-up finish to her friend and rival this time. Nastia Liukin won the biggest prize of all.

FINALLY! Geez.

Quoted: BEIJING (AP) -- The International Olympic Committee has asked gymnastics officials to investigate whether the Chinese women's gymnastics team that won the gold medal at the Beijing games had underage athletes, saying that more information had come to light.

That race was absurdly close... but if Phelps touched the wall harder than the other swimmer, registering him as first (even if the other swimmer appeared to be ahead) I'd say that's all part of the game and Phelps won fair and square...

I'd love to see the video from the Olympic "DiveCam" in action. Despite there being some footage from women's 10m diving, I don't see any taken with this gravity-driven falling camera into the water.

Seems amazing to me there is coverage in the WSJ, including this highly produced graphic simulation, and yet no actual video to look at!

Has anyone else seen this for real?

I am not enjoying the fu manchu or whatever he is going for here.

Quoted: For a man who performs extraordinary exploits in the pool, and who could take a record haul of golds in Beijing, Michael Phelps is having a remarkably ordinary time.
...
While tennis world number one Roger Federer and the NBA-studded U.S. basketball team have been surrounded by admirers, Phelps has been relatively untroubled.
...
"I was sitting in the dining hall the other day and Federer was in there and he just got swarmed," said the man who stands to dominate the Games if he shatters compatriot Mark Spitz's 1972 record.
...
"Some of the basketball guys were in there last night and we had a chance to meet them and hang out with them for a bit and they got swarmed too. I've been fine. A few pictures here and there but nothing major."

Found it - some DiveCam footage here at the 30s mark. Lots of great technology (DiveCam, Multi-frame photos) being used to explain and visualize what happens in the 2-3 seconds of a typical dive.
