There has been a real resurgence in activity related to the theremin recently. I can't identify any specific cause for this. The instrument is great fun to work with, but its reputation as difficult-to-master is well deserved. We spend a lot of time working with the theremin and it challenges us.
A lot of people use theremins as sound sources for audio post-production and other studio work - it's evocative, creates great glissando and can be mixed in at low levels to add mood & undertones. It's also a fun way to bring an audience's attention back to the stage in live performances.
PAiA does have an advantage in this (small!) market, as it's one of the most fun kits to build you can imagine - and building a theremin from scratch really enhances its use as a tool of exploration. Also, the PAiA kit has a lot of "extra" uses as a gestural controller that most theremins don't offer. It's an instruments we're always pulling off of the shelf to play with when we're in the lab.

Wow! I just got finished reading about Via's new 1.9 lb. $600 Win Laptop, here's Intel & Asus with 1/3 the cost. Powerful (relatively), light, cheap hardware is in development on many fronts!

Fill in the blank. What a great way to emphasize the lunacy of the current flap-up.

Provide power to the edge of the plastic sheet. You can then place a power receiving coil anywhere on the surface of the insulated sheet and take power via EM transferrance. Cool because the sheet can be built using printing technology, and it uses printable semiconductors & switches to control where the sheet turns on its transmitting coils to transfer power (otherwise, it would not be efficient).
