For most of his career, actor Robert Duvall was a tried and true Republican. He’s even been involved in the GOP conventions during the last several elections.
Now, approaching his 85th birthday, Duvall told the Daily Beast that he has come to lean more independent and is fed up with certain tactics that he says conservatives use.
“I’ve moved more to the center politically, more of an independent. We don’t want the government, the church, or anyone to tell us what to do. Especially the church,” he said.
He also called the Republican Party “a mess.”
Among Duvall’s many complaints are the Republican stance against birth control and the insistence by social conservatives that faith and politics go together.
“Also, religion and politics should be completely separate. Completely separate,” he said.
