Winona Ryder is finally speaking up about Johnny Depp.
Ryder officially came to her ex’s defense after hearing the allegations of domestic abuse filed by Depp’s wife, Amber Heard. Ryder maintains that Depp was never abusive toward her in their four-year relationship, but she makes it very clear she is not accusing Heard of lying.
Ryder and Depp were engaged in the early 1990s and still have several mutual friends.
“I can only speak from my own experience, which was wildly different than what is being said,” she told TIME magazine. “I mean, he was never, never that way towards me. Never abusive at all towards me. I only know him as a really good, loving, caring guy who is very, very protective of the people that he loves.”
Their past relationship has Ryder finding it hard to believe the allegations.
“It’s just hard to picture,” she said. “The only word I can come up with is unimaginable. You know with certain people you hear something and go, ‘I can see that.’ But this isn’t that.”
Ryder isn’t the only one of Depp’s exes who has spoken up in his defense. His ex-wife, Lori Anne Allison, and his longtime partner and mother of his children, Vanessa Paradis, both came to his defense.
Heard filed for divorce last month and accused the actor of being violent toward her. Reps for Depp have denied Heard’s claims.
