The gunman who committed a mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando is being identified by multiple news agencies as Omar Saddiqui Mateen. He was born in 1986 in New York City, so he would be 29 or 30 years old.
Mateen is a U.S. citizen from Fort Pierce, Florida and is not believed to have had a criminal record. WFTV is reporting that law enforcement was aware of Mateen before the nightclub shooting, but was not the target of any active investigation.
The Daily Beast reported that Mateen was person of interest to the FBI in 2013 and 2014, but his case was closed because it didn’t warrant any additional investigation.
CNN is reporting that Mateen worked as a private security guard.
Mateen’s parents are from Afghanistan, according to CBS.
Approximately 50 people are dead and over 50 injured in the attack on the gay nightclub that happened early Sunday morning. The attack is the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.
Mateen is also dead.
