Kylie Jenner has done a masterful job of becoming famous for being a celebrity. She’s latched on to the Kardashian/Jenner name and has, in many ways, already outshined her older and more established siblings.
Over the last year, the now 19-year-old has followed the road of her sisters, and dived into the world of scintillating photos and videos.
So comes her latest project, “Raw.” It’s not a music video, it’s not art, so it must be … hell, I don’t know. Maybe it’s a vanity project.
She’s in the shower with her boyfriend, the rapper Tyga, in what her photographer calls “super raw footage” that’s a “very personal experience.” Sasha Samsonova told W Magazine: “It’s like you’re watching this person from a point of view that has never been seen before.”
She goes on to note that’s no retouching at all, so you’re seeing Kylie in her natural state.
The only problem with that is you’re seeing her against a darkened background with shots that looks like the prelude to a soft porn film. The issue of retouching photos to make women look like something they’re not is a big one. Amy Schumer, Ronda Rousey and Khloe Kardashian have both spoken out against that and encouraged women to be happy with who they are.
But this video isn’t a crusade against body shaming. It’s … like I said, I don’t know.
The reaction has been as you might expect. On Twitter, her fans — lots of men, no surprise — think the video is the best Christmas gift ever. Vanity Fair, in its headline, was far less generous, and said Jenner, “quietly released (a video) that has no reason for existing besides gratuitous sensuality in wet T-shirts, but it’s being billed as art.”
What do you think?
