Allow Richard Simmons a moment to speak for himself.
The fitness guru took to Facebook late Tuesday night to address rumors that the reason he has shied away from the public eye is because he is transitioning into a woman.
“Some tabloids have recently falsely reported that I am transitioning. In response, I feel compelled to set the record straight and refute these lies,” Simmons began. “Although I am not transitioning, I have and always will be supportive of those who are going through their journey.”
Simmons also took some time to address the massacre in Orlando that occurred over the weekend at an LGBT-friendly nightclub.
“We should not lose focus on showing love, strength and compassion to all of the LGBT community during these tragic times. My broken heart and healing thoughts are with the people of Orlando and all other victims of prejudice, bigotry and hate”
He signed off with his name and date.
Rumors that Simmons was transitioning into a woman took off earlier this month when tabloids claimed that he went into hiding to cover up the fact that he was living his life as a woman named Fiona.
Just hours after that report, his rep, Tom Estey addressed the rumors with PEOPLE.
“It’s not true,” Estey said. “He is not transitioning into a woman. He has decided to live quietly the last few years. He had knee surgery a few years ago and has a bum knee. He is still on Twitter and Facebook and works behind the scenes continuing to inspire and motivate people to lose weight. When he decides to come back, he will come back.”
At the time, Estey also addressed Simmons’ most recent hospitalization, just two weeks ago. He “was in the hospital over the weekend for dehydration and was out the next day. He’s a human being. He was in the public eye for over three decades, but he deserves his privacy. He should be able to have a private life. He just needed a break. He is still taking care of the people who need his help.”
After his rep gave a statement about his health, Simmons took to Facebook to reassure fans he was getting the rest he needed.
“Thank you to everyone who has reached out with love and concern after hearing I was in the hospital,” he wrote. ” I was dehydrated and needed some fluids and now I am feeling great! Summer is here – drink plenty of liquids. Big hugs and kisses for caring.”
