Usually, when you hear about someone or something eating a rat in the United States, it’s typically a snake doing the eating.

But it’s actually far more common globally, even considered to be a delicacy in some places. According to BBC, there is a vast array of countries that consume rats as a regular source of protein, including Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Ghana, China and Vietnam.

India even gets in on the action. According to the same BBC article, there are groups of people called “rat eaters” that tend to wealthier landowner’s farms. In exchange, they obtain the rights to eat the rats that overrun the fields.

They consider it a delicacy and a real treat to eat. I’m still not quite sure how I feel about that.
