By Roger Ebert 'Elizabeth, the Golden Age" is weighed down by its splendor. There are scenes where the costumes are so sumptuous, the sets so vast, the music so insistent, that we lose sight of the humans behind the dazzle of the production.

Reviews were bad but this is officially my favorite movie of 2009. Christopher Doyle's color, light, photography plus jarmusches silence, minimalism, and difference/repetition provide a pure crystal time image with a critique of control societies to match. Or as it is said by reviewers: "movie purposefully going nowhere" "Jarmusch's characteristic indifference to narrative excitement makes it hard to love" "As usual, Jarmusch is supremely uninterested in telling a story or exploring character, and is content to build up an atmosphere..." Beautiful.
