Daniel Carlson on eight pictures that shouldn't have been named a Best with an Oscar. Dotting via Sloane's dot of Carlson's blog (Slowly Going Bald). First time I've read this guy, but he's got a great, funny voice. A summary quote, and then a few choice excerpts are below. I don't know a lot about film, but his one glaring omission was that of "Chicago." What was that crap? I wasted my time watching it, AND now I have "All That Jazz" stuck in my head forevermore.
Quoted: I used to think the Oscars were about pure quality. Of course, I also used to believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the notion that love could keep two people together...
About Cameron: "He even shouted 'I’m the king of the world!' when the film won its 927 awards that year, a joke that sank faster than Leonardo DiCaprio’s corpse in the North Atlantic."
About Eastwood: "His contemporaries are wandering aimlessly through Wal-Mart in sandals and argyle socks, and this guy’s making damn masterpieces."

Really? I love Chicago -- mostly because Catherine Zeta Jones is BAD ASS in it. Renee Zelwegger makes me want to gnaw my own face off in that film. They should have left her out and opted for Naomi Watts or some such other whispy blond.
It was nothing more than an off-handed consolation prize for "Moulin Rouge," which was a thousand times better. I kept thinking throughout "Chicago": "This is it? You're kidding me. Why am I not in a theater watching this on a stage with an over sized red curtain?" While "Moulin" had actual cinematic quality, this was pure stage-put-on-film.
Yeah, I guess it's tough to get the live production feel out of your head. It was the first time I saw it. I just think CZJ is super talented. Richard Gere and Renee, meh. Not so much.
It seems a little unfair to just pick the rest of the field, which he did in several years. Fun commentary, but I guess I never went through a "trusting the Academy" period, so it's a bit hard to relate. There will always be disagreement - that's what makes awards fun despite all the politicking and arbitrary momentum shifts. But that's what makes the post fun too.
