The right bike is important. Take you time and do it right!

Recommended by a friend (and his friends and the bike shop) as an economical ($650) road bike.
Quoted: # Carbon fork blades smooth out the road ahead for comfort that feels “nearly weightless”
# Shimano 27-speed drivetrain with FSA Omega triple cranks offer plenty of easy and efficient gearing options for the climbs
# Kenda tires keep you moving along at high speeds while remaining exceptionally quiet against the pavement - ross - Aug 18 2008 | shopping, road bikes, cycling

I highly recommend going and trying a bunch of bikes before purchasing any of them, even ones which are recommended by friends. Believe it or not, the feel and the sizing varies significantly. Finding something that fits is paramount. I tried out 4 or 5 and found them all incredibly different.
try out marin bikes -- they have a great line and are certainly worth checking out.
i've got a marin bike and love it!
thanks for the tips.
