My experience is that Fry's is a great place to buy things (when you know what you're bugying), but an awful place to take machines in for repair. Your best bet is a small service provider, like Computer & Applications in Bellevue where the techs actually know something.
We have our service contract at Frys - including replacement laptop while his is being repaired.
Well, that's a really good reason to go there! What's he using for backups? I know somebody that dotted a bunch of backup solutions :) For Chris, I'd recommend Mozy.
