Yeah, the upper layers are crazy complex. BUT, the upper layers are really only useful for Intranet sites, where people are dragging and dropping toolbox items in their WYSIWYG Visual Editor thingy.
The base layer of ASP.NET is quite uncrufty -- it hasn't changed since 1.0.
