  • I've been fascinated by these creatures since I was a kid. After they were first discovered in 1938 off the South-East coast of Africa, a second species was discovered in Indonesia in 1997.

    Would you believe there exists a grouping(of which the coelacanth is a member) called the "Lazarus taxon", after the New Testament character? Not to be confused with the Elvis taxon ;-) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_taxon.
