Quoted: A Vented enclosure contains a port/vent/bass reflex so the interior of the enclosure is open to the outside atmosphere. There are both advantages and disadvantages to the design. The main function of the ported/vented enclosure is to attempt to recover the sound waves coming off the back of the woofer and redirect them to the outside. Thus extending you bass range.
