Faves for this Web page

  • Michael took a step down in my eyes for the quality of his analysis. I've heard from so many people that tagged is EVIL. They are big time spammers.

So where does Michael get off saying they are "focused on security of its users first" - with no mention about the uproar about their immoral and probably illegal email practices (sending spam to all your friends without your permission).

What is great is that many of the commenters on his post called him to task. What's NOT great is that he never responded to them here.

TechCrunch is a great filter for what's new in Web technology startups - but he's lost some authority in my eyes as far as the quality of his analysis.

Will this hurt TechCrunch? Our reputation is our most valuable commodity; I think this shows how quickly it can be damaged.

  • Quoted: Co-founder and CEO Greg Tseng told me today that the company has reached profitability on $600,000 in monthly revenues, and that user growth has spiked to 350,000 new users per day.

Their registration process is viral spam and it's pretty easy to understand how many people are led to sign up by the invite's simple text. I've been getting them in my inboxes thanks to friends responding/joining/whatever. Their real user base can't be growing at 350k/day

The site isn't great and I believe it when he says the ask.com integration isn't working - only 1 of the search boxes of the many I tried on various pages worked (is that Ask's fault or theirs?). Judging from the site's inconsistent user experience, I'm guessing it's both. Good for them to get a partnership for some revenue though.

thanks..after i dotted this, i read some of the comments saying the same things. i personally haven't received an invite yet -- but i'm sure it's only a matter of time.

    • derek - May 10 2007

      They should be shut down.

    • shiwani - May 10 2007

Um, yeah, I just had an experience with their viral spam today. They definitely get their members through trickery and deceit, I tell you!

    • ms.kruse - May 10 2007

Sorry! I got an invite from a photographer friend. I figured it was a photo sharing site. OMG. I feel so stupid. A million times, I'm sorry! Question to Mohit and Derek, do you think I need to create a totally new email account? Even though I changed my password--do you think tagged knows I changed my password? I'm so paranoid now.

    • shiwani - May 10 2007

I actually almost did the EXACT same thing - and if you read the comments to this article, apparently so have thousands of other people. I think one of the comments said there's a way to unsubscribe or cancel your account?

    • ms.kruse - May 10 2007

I don't see it. Does anyone know?

    • guju4life - May 10 2007

but bottom line is that they are making money ;)

    • derek - May 10 2007

They may know you changed your password, but that doesn't mean they know what it is ;)

Change your password, make sure it is very secure, and you'll be fine. Oh, and never give it to anybody.

      Paranoia is good!

Melissa, you can either go to http://www.Tagged.com/no_more.html or e-mail SiteSquad@tagged.com. Good luck! You should send a nasty note once they've unsubscribed you. Ha.

Wow, this is not the feedback that i would want to see about my business.
