  • We saw this movie over the weekend. Seriously one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. The entire cast is phenomenal and the plotlines were intense. Highly recommended.

Went to see this today. This has to be one of the most intense movies I have ever seen (even more than Hotel Rwanda).

Forest Whitaker did an outstanding job portraying Idi Amin. He was extremely believable and made the entire movie thought provoking.

    This is a must see.

Yeah, I thought this was awesome. Noreen's parents were telling me there is a movie called "The Rise and Fall of Idi Amin" that is also very good - and it sounds like it focuses more on what he did to Uganda (rather than his personality, etc as this movie). Def wanna see it - movie night in a couple weekends perhaps?

Let's do it! I was doing some research on him and noticed that movie mentioned a couple of times.

I went to see this on Friday, and thought it was very good. Forest Whittaker did an AMAZING job, even down to the accent, but I thought it fell short of the book in several ways. First, it gave the impression of a more compressed period of time, and this made the protagonist seem more hapless than was the case, and minimzed the sheer volume of brutality that was happening. Second, and most importantly, it sheltered viewers from that brutality. While I'm grateful for not watching any more violence, it left one feeling that things were sorta bad, but nowhere near as awful as things were during that time, for everyone. Kicking out the asians was bad, but you didn't get a sense for how bad, or the effect it had on the economy, or how people were starving in the countryside, or that there were big open pits for mass graves in the forest outside Kampala, and that thousands of people went missing. It seems like maybe that Idi Amin movie should be a required companion movie to this one. On the other hand, I could see wanting to play it less violent and brutal so that more people will see it, and not play into that dark continent mythos. All in all, worth seeing, and a good movie. Like most other novel adaptations, the book is just better.

    Opens nationwide Oct 20th.

Quoted: Based on the events of the brutal Ugandan dictator Idi Amin's regime as seen by his personal physician during the 1970s

I want to see this movie! Oprah was raving about it.

I'll remember to ping you when it comes out then! People seem to be impressed with Forest Whitaker's acting. I won't be surprised if it's Oscar-worthy.

      Sounds good, thanks!
