A method that combines the flexibility of tagging with the search-narrowing power of a deep hierarchy is to combine the tags to an 'instant hierarchy': The user chooses from a pool of keywords. Like in tag clouds, he gets to see some items then and a list
Interesting report on an alterjnative to tagging that allows for some user-structured hierarchy.
"Instant Hierarchy" anyone?

This actually sounds like a really fun wine tasting and auction. The Pants Family household is TOTALLY GOING, whether we like it or not. Prizes, y'all.

The only "alternative" I see here is that clicking on successive tags in the UI adds an AND query. In Blue Dot this is done (manually) by typing in more than one tag in the search box; e.g.
"tag:design tag:css"
I think this has some uses when people start to build larger data sets. But the most common query is to want to "pivot" to the new tag when the user clicks on another one. But, something interesting to think about for a future feature for more sophisticated tag browsing UI.
