Quoted: Japan's No. 2 automaker, long a laggard in the fuel-efficient technology, is countering mighty Toyota with several new models that run on both gas and battery power.

Quoted: The weapon Fukui chose was a lineup of four models, including Honda's sole current hybrid in production, the Civic Hybrid; a new hybrid-only model yet to be named, which will be a five-door, five-passenger compact, with an exterior design similar to its new fuel cell vehicle concept, the FCX Clarity; a hybrid sports car version of its CR-Z line; and a new hybrid model for its Fit compact cars, sold as the Jazz in Europe.

Sweet. I'd love to see a hybrid Fit. I'll be buying a new car in the next year or so and I'm having a hard time justifying anything that's not a hybrid. Smart Car is making a completely electric model, but it's going to be $35k. The regular models start around $12k, which is really tempting.

I think even the regular Fit is not a bad bet if you want a car right now. It's not hybrid, but it gets mileage comparable to the Smart Car. And, the Fit is much safer and has a higher end interior.
