It's beyond desperation at this point.
Quoted: Worse, Palin's routine attacks on the media have begun to spill into ugliness. In Clearwater, arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric's questions for her "less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media." At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, "Sit down, boy."

Neat! I'd never heard of them before, but 826 looks like a really great organization to volunteer with. Good luck!
Well the orientation was really great (and 25 or 30 new volunteers showed up)! They're becoming quite popular.
I hope to get a position helping out with the field trips or tutoring so that I can work directly with the kids. The field trips sound amazing! Classes of young kids come in, they learn about stories, and the they collaboratively write the beginning of a story before breaking off to finish individually. Each kid leaves with their own bound book, their own faces on the back as the author), professionally illustrated by a cartoonist who works there, etc. It sounds really fun and makes the kids feel like published authors.
There is a field trip for older kids that they do on screenwriting as well. Similar, but more complex in that you have to teach kids to express story through dialog, setting, etc.
