Quoted: Steve Martin used to do a routine that went like this: "You too can be a millionaire! It's easy: First, get a million dollars. Now..." If you put that routine between hard covers, you'd have "The Secret,"
It has always bothered me how much sway Oprah has over what books will become best-sellers. But I'm not sure that's entirely her fault. Still, I'd have to read this book to get a sense for how crappy it is before I pass judgement.
Quoted: By continuing to hawk "The Secret," a mishmash of offensive self-help cliches, Oprah Winfrey is squandering her goodwill and influence, and preaching to the world that mammon is queen.

Difference being that when I say stupid things in public (that would be... here on BlueDot), I'm shamed only by four friends and in my Permanent Record on Google. It's not Oprah's fault that her errors in judgement show effect on a much grander scale. Surely if she was capable of avoiding them, she wouldn't be making them. Perhaps fortunately for her, she has enough money that she'll never be forced into painful self-realization: ironic for someone who trades on transforming introspection into external manifestations.
