These cases make me SO mad. You mean to tell me her doing a year in jail won't royally screw up her otherwise well cared for chidlren? This is why American kids are growing up to be so neurotic... they can't be left alone for more than a minute without people crying neglect. I wonder if that cop ever had to look after 3 kids by himself...

Quoted: Treffly Coyne was out of her car for just minutes and no more than 10 yards away. But that was enough to land her in court after a police officer spotted her sleeping 2-year-old daughter alone in the vehicle.

      omg that's ridiculous

I hope the judge throws it out of court and lambasts the police for being idiots.

this is just silly. i was reading an article a few months ago about how parents who leave their kids in hot cars for hours to die are not always prosecuted because they can't prove intent for harm. so apparently, if you are such a bad parent that you forget you even have a child in the car, that's okay. but if you lock the car and set the alarm and walk away for a minute, you are a bad parent.

Geez, me and my siblings were left in the car all the time in the early 80s...for like at least 30 minutes at a time. Oh, and we were also locked outside for hours. This new wave of 21st century coddle-crazy parents need to grow pair.

i know - i feel like parents aren't given the space to make honest mistakes anymore...

There's this crazy new pressure to be the perfect parent now. I was standing in line with this lady and overheard her telling someone how god-aweful she feels about giving her baby formula instead of breast feeding. It wasn't even that anyone said anything to her -- it's just the sentiment out there. I don't think that kind of guilt existed 20 years ago.

    • shiwani - Mar 12 2008

yeah, slate had a dear prudence piece about a woman who was being yelled at by complete strangers for bottle-feeding rather than breast-feeding her baby. nevermind she had a medical reason... but that's besides the point!

    • RHceleste - Mar 12 2008

Do you think these charges would be pressed against a father who did the exact same thing? My feeling is no. It seems like pretty much all of the pressure to be a perfect parent is falling on women.

    • ms.kruse - Mar 12 2008

Yeah, I totally agree. It seems like every mother I know from my generation feels like they HAVE to stay home with their baby and not work -- or else they are terrible people. There is definitely a "perfection" microscope we live under that does not exist for men -- especially if you're either a mother or a female executive or hold some such high office.

    • kristen - Mar 14 2008

Well, it's not surprising ... the case is not going to trial and the charges were dropped because prosecution couldn't meet the burden of proof.
