I have an IBM 5100 in my garage. It still works! This $20,000 personal computer was something I drooled over when I was in high school in 1977.

$20,000 computer? You could almost buy a house for that price at '77!

What OS did that thing run?

      From: http://www.oldcomputermuseum.com/ibm_5100.html

"The APL micro code emulates a subset of the System/360 instruction set, while the BASIC micro code emulates the System/3. The APL interpreter was derived from APLSV."

      Very Cool.
I'm impressed that the tape drive still pulls the tapes accurately, and that the tapes' binder still holds the magnetic particles.

It was all custom MSI - runs either BASIC and/or APL depending on the model.

I have NOT tested the tape drive or tried reading any of the very old tape cartridges I have for this - so I just key in basic programs manually.

I bought my first home computer in 1977 - and Apple II with 16K of RAM (later upgraded to 48K) - for about $1,700. The Apple II did pretty much everything the IBM 5100 could do - and then some (though you had to attach a monitor and a cassette tape drive).
