Quoted: Three decades ago, Justice John Paul Stevens was appointed to the Supreme Court as a judicial conservative and moderate Republican. So how did he come to lead the liberal wing of a fiercely divided court?

Quoted: “Including myself,” he said, “every judge who’s been appointed to the court since Lewis Powell” — nominated by Richard Nixon in 1971 — “has been more conservative than his or her predecessor. Except maybe Justice Ginsburg. That’s bound to have an effect on the court.”

And there's the answer. Gotta love all the Supreme Court attention in publishing this year.
