Well if you are more concerned with your wallet, then the used car would be the way to go.
There are not very many unsold Prius on the lot right now... the used ones have a higher sticker cost than a brand new fully loaded one from the Toyota website!
And when you ask the dealer if you can buy a new one without all the markup, they tell you that you cant directly order from the factory so you will be paying the premium for a Prius.
I think those extra 10-20k spent on the hybrid could be better used to better the environment in some other way ;)

Love this column from Slate. It's settled - a hybrid is still more energy efficient!
Quoted: I'm shopping for a car, and my tree-hugging pals are pushing me to get a Prius. But it seems wasteful to buy a brand-new car, given all the energy that goes into the production process. Wouldn't it be greener to get a certified, pre-owned vehicle with decent gas mileage?

Very interesting...this is my current conundrum. Though after watching "The End of Suburbia" this weekend, I am loathe to buy anything! http://www.endofsuburbia.com/
It's a great documentary -- some very smart reporting. The only thing you'll want to buy after watching this is a bike ... or possibly a horse.
