i recommend this movie highly. as much as i like his previous movies and their universal themes i find this one to be the most human and personal movie he's made. the story is more dark but there is much depth to it. i interpreted it as a story of a young woman who discovers her shadow and a young man who discovers his light. both needed each other in order to make these discoveries. and they both needed to embrace different aspects of themselves in order to get some ground on reality. at the same time, i saw all the characters in this movie as different aspects of the same person. i think this makes a lot of sense given we carry our parents in us and all sorts of other people who make profound impact on our lives. madame sulliman perhaps represents our authentic self that is the source of most powerful sorcery but is also subject to the rule of other people we carry in us.
i also loved the art and the music and the voice of christian bale :)

Excellent review, Rad! I haven't seen this one yet but I'm going to add it to my Netflix queue right now.
Loved this one! I'm normally a subtitle snob, but I watched it twice just to hear Billy Crystal's dub as Calcifer. He slayed me.
Did you ever see My Neighbor Totoro? It's an older one, which means the animation isn't quite as sexy, but for what I thought was going to be a silly children's movie it turned out to be a real joy to watch. The dub is ok but I like the original voices better. (there some cute content on the DVD about the US child actors playing the two little girls though).
My all time favorite of Miyazaki's is still Spirited Away... The movement, the music, the characters... I never get tired of it!
haven't seen totoro but now it's the next movie on my list!! thanks for the recommendation. chris and i are fans of spirited away as well and have watched it numerous time. i even had dreams about those cute tiny black ant creatures :)
