I had dinner with Dr. Mark Lehner last night - he gave a small presentation on their recent work in Egypt, especially highlighting the field school they have established to try to transfer best practices to local archaeologists in Egypt and the region.

Their focus is on "information collection" - rather than recovery of rare artifacts. So many sites have been disturbed and valuable archaeological information is lost due to lack of knowledge about how to properly record the condition of the site.

We also saw some amazing LIDAR site surveys that a Japanese team is doing which can record so much more than previous manual site survey methods.

Quoted: AERAweb.org, the official web site of Ancient Egypt Research Associates (AERA), provides information on the work of Dr. Mark Lehner and the international team of the Giza Plateau Mapping Project.
