Quoted: When Jack Goldsmith took over as the key constitutional adviser for the Bush administration, he soon found himself at odds with the White House.
“I don’t think any president in the near future can have the same attitude toward executive power, because the other institutions of government won’t allow it,” he said softly. “The Bush administration has borrowed its power against future presidents.”
Praise Jesus.

They really are hanging Thaksin out to dry:
"The president's spokesman later provided a strikingly mild response only after being asked by a reporter, pronouncing the White House "disappointed" by the coup."
Given that mild reaction, I'll bet the coup leaders actually had tacit US approval.
Democracy is great unless you happen to not like the results.
