They really are hanging Thaksin out to dry:
"The president's spokesman later provided a strikingly mild response only after being asked by a reporter, pronouncing the White House "disappointed" by the coup."
Given that mild reaction, I'll bet the coup leaders actually had tacit US approval.
Democracy is great unless you happen to not like the results.
