It is not that surprising to me. Africa had a huge Asian community soon after liberation, but many got booted. I think it was Idi Amin who later told some other tyrant that that was one of his biggest mistakes. The same sort of work ethic and business drive that allows so many Asian families to do well in the States, Europe, Oz, is certainly going to allow them to do well in Africa. In much of Eastern Africa, most of the small to mid-sized shops are Asian owned (usually Indian/Pakistani), so I think the Chinese are a bit of a newer trend. Certainly, there are lots of Chinese work crews building slapdash roads in Eastern Africa. But that isn't the same thing as owning and settling.
