The Free Knowledge Institute (FKI) is a non-profit organisation that fosters the free exchange of knowledge in all areas of society. Inspired by the Free Software movement, the FKI promotes freedom of use, modification, copying and distribution of knowledge in four different but highly related fields: education, technology, culture and science.

The Open Knowledge Definition (OKD) sets out principles to define the 'open' in open knowledge. The term knowledge is used broadly and it includes all forms of data, content such as music, films or books as well any other type of information.

SHERPA is investigating issues in the future of scholarly communication. It is developing open-access institutional repositories in a number of research universities to facilitate the rapid and efficient worldwide dissemination of research.

ROARMAP (Registry of Open Access Repository Material Archiving Policies) - tracks the growth of institutional self-archiving policies.

CKAN is developed and maintained by the Open Knowledge Foundation.It is a registry of open knowledge packages and projects (and a few closed ones). CKAN is the place to search for open knowledge resources as well as register your own

Based in the US, this group has helped press for a stronger NIH mandate to deposit peer reviewed research articles and the Federal Research Public Access Act, but also has a watch on progress for international public access poilcies.
