NYT describes some of the plans Yahoo and Google have for integrating social networking into their web based email systems.
Quoted: Web-based e-mail systems already contain much of what Facebook calls the social graph — the connections between people. That’s why the social networks offer to import the e-mail address books of new users to jump-start their list of friends. Yahoo and Google realize that they have this information and can use it to build their own services that connect people to their contacts.

Does seem like a long time ago now.
Quoted: A long, long time ago — last Monday, that is — Facebook seemed a much larger land mass than it ever actually was. That was when it was celebrating its ability to command a generous $15 billion valuation while pocketing a $240 million investment from Microsoft.

Quoted: With the Facebook platform, only Facebook itself can be a "container" -- "apps" can only run within Facebook itself. In contrast, with Open Social, any social network can be an Open Social container and allow Open Social apps to run within it.

Ling's mistake - taking the option to "quit" and save face rather than be "fired". Getting fired you have the option to sue the company for wrongful termination and seek damages. If you quit - it's all over. Given the short duration before a major stock award that was due him, it seems to me he would have a case that Facebook a) had no compelling reason to fire him and b) was acting in bad faith with respect to his original employment offer.
