Live Images from inside the abandoned, reputedly haunted prison. Updated every 15 seconds.
This was the first prison designed by the Quakers to induce feelings of "penitence" in prisoners (hence the word "penitentiary"). The method used was total solitary confinement. Trouble is, all of the prisoners (and some of the guards) went INSANE. They had to shut it down.
The architecture was designed to maximize isolation from the outside world, and all humanity. 4 inch windows on the ceiling 15 feet above the cells were the only contact with the outside world. These slits on the ceilings were called "The Eye of God". There was no way to see or speak to other prisoners or even guards. Meals were slipped into cells via slots on the floors. Guards wore socks over their shoes to maintain silence. Doors were 3 feet tall to force prisoners into a prayer position if they were ever being moved. While they kneeled, a black hood was placed over their head for transfer.

"The facility was operated under the Pennsylvania System from 1829 to 1913. This system, used by the Quakers, was designed to force the incorrigibles sent there to look inside themselves and find God. In reality, the system which placed inmates in complete solitude, drove many a sane man to madness."
"Prisoners at Eastern State had a toilet, table, bunk and Bible in their cells, in which they were locked all but one hour a day. When the prisoners did leave their cells, a black hood would be placed over their head so they could not see any other prisoners as they were guided through the halls of the prison. Interaction and any form of communication between inmates was forbidden.
Inmates lived a life in mundane solitude and would only get a glimpse of sunlight, known as "The Eye of God" which came through a slit in the prison ceiling."

A very interesting prison litigation story that doesn't involve Johnathan Lee Riches or GITMO.
1 FaverViewed: 2 TimesQuoted: Prisoners sue over Nutraloaf with some regularity, usually arguing either that their due process rights have been violated (because they are served the punitive loaves without a hearing) or that the dish is so disgusting as to make it cruel and unusual and thus a violation of the Eighth Amendment.

Even the zealousness of the set designer and stylist can't compete with this song and Isaac Hayes's rendition.
