I noticed today that Squirt (the soda brand) made me feel fairly energized after drinking it. I checked the can to confirm that it didn't have caffeine, and while reading it I saw sodium benzoate and wondered, "I know this is a preservative, but I wonder what the structure of this is? Could this chemical be stimulating me?"
What do you know, there is a study linking the combination of sodium benzoate and certain coloring agents to hyperactive behavior.
