40% of Americans have a negative tax rate and the top 1% of Americans pay 40% of the taxes. And it's only getting more severe do to the broadening income gap.
Quoted: Did Bush cut taxes for the rich? Yes. But he cut taxes for the poor even more. If we look at the measure that really matters - the change in effective tax rates - the bottom 50% got a much bigger tax cut than the top 1%. Did the dollar value of Bush's tax cuts go mostly to the wealthy? Absolutely. It could hardly be otherwise. Since the well-off pay the overwhelming majority of taxes, any tax cut with a prayer of influencing the economy would have to go mostly to them.
Quoted: The real issues here are clear. One is having a shrinking minority of citizens pay most of Washington's bills. Social cohesion falls apart. The majority who pay nothing resent those with higher incomes; the minority who pay heavily resent those who don't pay.

Politics, woo
Quoted: The first issue is our out-of-control foreign policy. America is embroiled in shooting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. We spend more on our military than nearly the rest of the world combined. We have troops stationed in over a hundred foreign countries. Manic interventionism has stretched our military to the breaking point, and has ruined our nation’s reputation.
Quoted: The second issue is our impending economic implosion. Our government, which has shed the last vestiges of constitutional restraint, has made a myriad of promises that it cannot keep. Our outstanding obligations to fund social security, government health care programs, and everything else under the sun are rapidly bankrupting our nation. To maintain these Ponzi schemes, the Fed is debasing our currency and igniting an ugly bout of hyperinflation.

Excellent article on the cost of Iraq
Quoted: The future historian would note that for the past century America has been one of largest military powers on the planet. This naturally involved a budgetary commitment. For some of the past century, the American military was quite small. But on average American military spending was about twice the share of GDP that it now is, about 5%. Moreover, with Iraq consuming between 15% and 20% of that figure, the future historian would likely view the entire affair as relatively minor in purely budgetary terms. That is hard for us to comprehend while living through it, but it is the way the numbers break.

I never learned about this in school
Quoted: On the eve of Hillary Clinton's landmark run for the Presidency, now would be a good time to remember Victoria Woodhull, the first woman ever to run for President.

Pretty slick political quiz - it lets you weight the issues you deem to be the most important, which in my opinion increases its accuracy by a lot. Unsuprisingly, my #1 was Ron Paul at 72%, probably because I heavily weighted 'Trade and Economics' and 'Taxes and Budget'

Never heard of this guy, I guess he did pretty well in the debates
Quoted: In 1988, Paul won the nomination of the Libertarian Party for the U.S. Presidency. He placed third in the popular vote (with 431,750 votes - 0.47%),
Quoted: He is the only 2008 Republican presidential candidate to have voted against the Iraq War.
