click to playPart 2 Of my review of the Fall Out Boy/Plain White T's/Gym Class Heroes concert from last night.
Seriously? A Fall Out Boy song about getting some? High comedy. As for their set they opened with "Sugar We're Going Down", the big hit from their first album. Then they played about 53 minutes of nothing I had ever heard of before including some bizarre between-song jabs at Kanye West. That was followed by the F Word guitarist declaring "this next song is probably the greatest song every written about jealousy" at which point they covered The Killers' "Mr. Brightside".
They finished with "This Ain't A Scene (It's A God Damn Arms Race)" (wtf does that even mean?) and "Thanks For The Memories" two of the other three songs I knew they sang, but they never played "Dance, Dance" so I felt there was something left to be desired. If you want to see a microcosm of their entire live act, check out the video for Thanks For The Memories. Than spin move is the only thing any of them know how to do.
As for the audience, I was definitely at the older end of the spectrum, especially when you throw out all the parents chaperoning groups of 14 year old girls. Predictably the crowd was very "West Side", if you're from Grand Rapids and know what I mean.
It wasn't a bad time though. There was some great people watching and it was only $5.50 for a 20oz beer.

click to playPart 1 Of my official review on the Fall Out Boy/Plain White T's/Gym Class Heroes concert from last night:
Surprisingly Plain White T's was the best of the three. They had the best stage presence and the tightest set and they smartly ended it with "Hey There Delilah". Also worth noting was the oddity of the Plain White T's drummer being black.
Gym Class Heroes were the worst of the three, partially because they opened with this song, their biggest hit to date, but mostly because they played two covers in an 8-10 song set, meaning they barely have enough material to have an album. Gym Class Heroes also fell victim to the "too many people shouting at once" pitfall of most live rap performances.
Fall Out Boy was mediocre, but the enthusiasm from the crowd was absolutely devastating. People in the general admission floor area had a mosh pit... at a Fall Out Boy concert. They also lost points for encouraging the young ones to "pull out your cell phones and wave them in the air during this next song". Don't kids smoke anymore these days? When did lighters go out of style? Also, FOB's lead singer deferred to one of the guitarists the entire show. I don't think he talked more than once between songs, whereas the guitarist felt the need to "butch up" the show by peppering his monologues with the F word, alot. Another thing that made me chuckle was his declaration of "this next song is for the guys in the audience. Its all about getting some. Am I right guys?"
