DIY $60 Jib, weighs 2 pounds!

Easy to build, easy to carry, light enough to sit on a standard consumer tripod.

Very cool. The demo footage was pretty awesome given the simplicity of the device. I guess a tripod on wheels is all you need for a decent dolly too?

Maybe if you used those big rubber wheels from Harbor Freight...

Simple tools work - my camcorder almost always has a $25. monopod attached (less than a pound) which I hold on the end (half-extended) when it's not planted. Using both hands in this way gives very steady shooting & works overhead as well.

Sha Na Na and the Invention of the Fifties

A terrific article in Columbia College Today on how "The Fifties" replaced "the 50's". Insightful quotations from the early 70's about the displacement of "beat" images from our post-war history.

    Magnetic Movie

    Quoted:
The secret lives of invisible magnetic fields are revealed as chaotic ever-changing geometries . All action takes place around NASA's Space Sciences Laboratories, UC Berkeley, to recordings of space scientists describing their discoveries . Actual VLF audio recordings control the evolution of the fields as they delve into our inaudible surroundings, revealing recurrent ‘whistlers' produced by fleeting electrons . Are we observing a series of scientific experiments, the universe in flux, or a documentary of a fictional world?.

Meet the Spartans: another terrible spoof movie from the nongeniuses who brought you Date Movie and Epic Movie.

Josh Levin review in Slate with the kind of a closer you only get to use once a decade.

Quoted: This was the worst movie I've ever seen, so bad that I hesitate to label it a "movie" and thus reflect shame upon the entire medium of film. Friedberg and Seltzer do not practice the same craft as P.T. Anderson, David Cronenberg, Michael Bay, Kevin Costner, the Zucker Brothers, the Wayans Brothers, Uwe Boll, any dad who takes shaky home movies on a camping trip, or a bear who turns on a video camera by accident while trying to eat it. They are not filmmakers. They are evildoers, charlatans, symbols of Western civilization's decline

    BASE Jump Catapult

Quoted: BASE Jumpers have been known for going to great lengths in order to obtain some altitude, but this has to be the most unique we've seen so far.
