My unsubstantiated opinion is that smart-guy Miguel de Icaza is acting naive to hide an ugly ulterior motive. From several (not all) angles, his Mono play was stupid to begin with but it became wholly nonsensical after the Novell-MS deal. This is the first article (opinion piece) I've seen that calls him out on it. Sure, this article is no more than rhetoric but there are no facts to work with and rhetoric drives de-motivation (of potential Mono adopters) in the absence of facts.
