CU applauds California for ending ZIP code-based auto insurance rates

Great move by california, who passed a law barring auto insurance companies to base your rate on your zip code. instead, they must base it on your driving record.

I wonder if there is an actual correlation betwixt zip code and driving record though. Like, would it be possible to say: "Somebody from the 90210 area code is less likely to get into a multicar accident"? Or area codes that are a further away from the freeway than other area codes. A la: Ballard vs. u-district.
