Capitalist Roaders - New York Times

Interesting article (this week's Sunday Times cover story) on China's nascent car culture.

Quoted: China is in the middle of a car-buying and road-building boom. But what happens when hundreds of millions of people all discover the joys — and agonies — of car culture at the same time?

    百度贴吧_50吧

Baidu's "forum" linked to a search result. Discovered this feature in the article I previously dotted about China and Google. Apparently these types of interactive features are enormously popular in China, and one reason that Baidu has captured so much market share.

FRONTLINE: the tank man | PBS

Quoted: On June 5, 1989, one day after Chinese troops expelled thousands of demonstrators from Tiananmen Square in Beijing, a solitary, unarmed protester stood his ground before a column of tanks advancing down the Avenue of Eternal Peace. Captured by Western photographers watching nearby, this extraordinary confrontation became an icon of the fight for freedom around the world. On April 11, veteran filmmaker Antony Thomas investigates the mystery of the tank man -- his identity, his fate, and his significance for the Chinese leadership. The search for the tank man reveals China's startling social compact -- its embrace of capitalism while dissent is squashed -- designed to stifle the nationwide unrest of 1989. This policy has allowed educated elites and entrepreneurs to profit handsomely, while the majority of Chinese still face brutal working conditions and low wages, and all Chinese must endure strict political and social controls. Some of these controls regulate speech on the Internet -- and have generated criticism over the involvement of major U.S. corporations such as Yahoo!, Cisco, Microsoft, and Google.

China: Too Many Men - CBS News

China has a huge gender gap.

Quoted: China credits its economic success in part to its stringent one-child policy but, as Lesley Stahl reports, one of the side effects is that the country faces a major gender imbalance. In short, there are too many boys and not enough girls.

china has almost completed the installation of what it calls an impenetrable operating system that will work with key government and military servers. That puts them ahead of our government in this department, which is worrisome given that they've already started to hack everything we've got.

Including Berkeley's student records; they harvested 163,000 accounts with personal info. Great....

Quoted: Kylin's existence was disclosed to Congress during recent hearings that included new details on how Beijing is preparing to wage cyberwarfare with Washington.
