Hurricane Katrina: After the Levees Broke « Et Cetera: Publick and Privat Curiosities

Confronted by the approach of Hurricane Gustav, by Sunday afternoon a historic evacuation of Louisiana's Gulf Coast, the largest evacuation in state history, had been completed. Two million people had joined in an exodus that left New Orleans standing in near silence as a ghost town. Policemen and National Guardsmen were carrying guns as they stood watching over the city's empty streets, while the nation anticipated that Hurricane Gustav could rival Hurricane Katrina in its destructive power.

This article presents a number of stunning photographs that show the destruction left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and a video showing New Orleans as a “ghost town” after the flooding. In addition, it includes a deeply moving, memorable photo-gallery that documents Katrina's shattering aftermath, which is accompanied by music audio.

Meditations on Our Future: Younger Than Jesus

“Younger Than Jesus” is a big multimedia art show presented at New York City’s New Museum. In the final years of the last art boom, numerous artists came to the fore who made punkish black-and-white art and ad hoc arrangements of disheveled stuff, architectural fragments, and Xeroxed photos. Many sold a lot of work, but most will be part of a lost generation. They thought they were playing the system, but it turned out they were themselves being played.

“Younger Than Jesus” puts that kind of art behind us, pointing to what might lie beyond that recycling machine. The show presents the work of 50 artists from 25 countries; all were born after 1976 and are therefore under 33, Christ’s age at his death. Their art includes slacker themes, lots of blipping and bleeping and video-game references, but also a chunk of somber, enlightening meditations on our economic and environmental future.

Includes photographs and a video about the show.

But From Nothing Came Something: Jonathan, Just Because

When Kirsten Major and her friends decided to make a short film she had written, she asked if they could find time to shoot in the next few days, even though that would mean taking time off from work. The four of them just looked at each other in the coffee shop and realized that, as a matter of fact, they were all unemployed and free every day for the foreseeable future. Ms. Major described the plot for “Jonathan, Just Because” as a simple romantic film: two men take a chance on each other. “Both characters are heartbroken,” she said. “They have no money, they don’t have a lot to give. Everyone’s a little desperate.”

They named themselves the W.P.A. Players and worked with a budget of exactly nothing, but from that nothing came something. Artwork fueled by unemployment may be very good or painfully bad, but it will do something for all the people who make it.

The Tropicana’s “Folies Bergere” Gives its Final High-Kicking Can-Can

The final feathers have fallen on the Tropicana Hotel and Casino’s “Folies Bergere” in Las Vegas. At the final performance of the “Folies Bergere” on Saturday night, the Parisian topless revue dancers gave their last high-kicking can-cans. The large audience came to say its goodbye in style, with original cast members of the show and recent hires cheering wildly from the audience for each little bit of choreography by their younger counterparts.

The curtain came down lavishly on the Tropicana showgirl revue, which is said to be the longest-running showgirl review in America. The Tropicana “Folies Bergere” show was coming close to its 50th Anniversary on Christmas Day when it suddenly got its pink slip two months ago. Tropicana executives had decided not to reinvest in a new edition of the casino-owned revue, but they did not let their jewel go without one last chance to sparkle. The “Folies” died of slow starvation over the years, as management and ownership changes stalled major reinvestment in the production that in time had become more and more dated in the Cirque du Soleil era of Las Vegas.

This piece presents great photographs of the sexy showgirls, video and a wonderful Slide Show.

President Obama on Leno’s Tonight Show: I’m Stunned By Those AIG Bonuses! « Et Cetera: Publick and Privat Curiosities

Whenever a late-night television show features a sitting president, it usually comes in the form of material for a stand-up comedy routine. But on Thursday night, President Obama overturned another tradition when he appeared on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show to promote his economic recovery plan. President Obama held his own with the comedian, countering Mr. Leno’s jabs about the executive bonuses given out by the American International Group, saying, “The only place where I think this might work is Hollywood.” Obama did not explicitly endorse the House bill passed on Thursday, which would tax bonuses paid to those whose companies have gotten large amounts of federal bailout money, saying “The money’s already gone out.” “I think the best way to handle this is to make sure you’ve closed the door before the horse gets out of the barn,” he said.

When Mr. Leno asked whether someone should go to jail for the AIG debacle, President Obama replied, “Most of what got us into trouble was perfectly legal.” In his appearance with Mr. Leno, Obama carefully balanced his comments between projecting a sense of good humor and projecting a presidential bearing. For example, he momentarily appeared to look startled when Mr. Leno joked that the president had laid the problems of the banking sector at the doorstep of the Treasury Secretary, Timothy F. Geithner. “I love how you say it’s his problem,” Mr. Leno said. For a moment, President Obama gave a stone-faced look to Leno. Then he broke into a laugh, as if he suddenly realized that Leno’s put-down was meant as a joke. “All of this is my responsibility,” Obama said. “I’m trying to break a pattern in Washington where everybody’s always looking for someone to blame.”

This article includes a video of the full interview with President Obama on Jay Leno's show.
