Read Scott Oki's book. I have and I certainly believe he's on track. I don't agree with him 100% but he's so much closer to being on target than anything else I've read for awhile. Frankly, our educational system in Washington State (and the US, for that matter) needs big-time help. Oki's book addresses most of the problems succinctly and interestingly!

    Knol (from Google).

This is like Wikipedia with a major difference - it has to be "signed" and nobody else can revise it or change it. So it's like Wikipedia in reverse.

    HeraldNet: Pledge divides teacher, student

Interesting issue, well-covered by the Herald's star reporter....personally, I haven't recited the pledge of allegiance for over 35 years. But I have always shown respect by standing, taking my hat off, etc. I think the kid misses the point as to what it means to show respect - he can't really determine that himself. His definition of "respect" is so small, in this case, that it's really meaningless.

Quoted: Monroe High School and district staff are now looking at whether to discipline a music teacher after she compelled a boy to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.
