In case anyone who cares about stuff like this has missed it, Colin Cowherd is a jerk. He stole material from a UofM fan site w/o giving credit. Then, when he got called on it, he declared war on the sports blogosphere. And he isn't funny and his conception of Baseball Hall of Fame qualifications is crazy.
Thanks to Derek for introducing me to FJM - I don't mind Joe M. much, but otherwise this blog is spot on and hilarious (if you pay way too much attention to sports media, like me).

Old news, but I didn't find out until today. I wouldn't have been very worried about the Sox even if they got him, but it's nice to keep Peavy out of the AL Central.
Quoted: Rosenthal has doubts about the White Sox's ability to compete in the future, and he says that this may have been on Peavy's mind when he rejected the trade.

Quoted: Evidently MLB's accountants determined this predatory strategy to be a more cost-effective method of sending a message than leaving a burning bag of dog poo on every single baseball fan's doorstep.

Quoted: Fox lards its playoff broadcasts with postseason majesty. The postseason majesty is oozing from the speakers as Billy Bob Thornton narrates this year's high-concept movie tie-in opening sequence. Postseason majesty sucks.

An excellent parsing.

You must be Drew's friend before you can comment on this Fave.Yeah, taking someone's site down should not go unpunished. He should be suspended, and ESPN should reach into their pockets.
JM has a good "broadcast voice", and seems like a nice guy. He was also a fantastic baseball player.
However, the stuff that comes out of his mouth is absolutely hilarious ... he doesn't believe in statistics, and would build his team on "heart" and probably batting average. He also thinks that Billy Beane wrote Moneyball. A recent quote:
[Derek banging head]
Yeah, I guess to some extent picking on color analysts is like shooting fish in a barrel - not much more difficult than taking on local columnists and sports talk radio hosts. And I just don't mind Joe, while I mind most of FJM's targets...a lot. Joe's pleasant. He doesn't care about stats; no biggie, doesn't make him a moron. He's not nearly so bad as Tim McCarver. And he works well with John Miller, who is one of the best voices in the biz.
I did take special note of his "embellish" point during the season opener, though. I agree that the last thing guys like Placido Polanco and David Eckstein need is MORE credit. Hitting w/ guys in scoring position IS a stat. Really, there's a stat for everything. Anyway, on the whole I don't understand many of the numbers that get tossed around, but I understand that production can almost always be quantified.
Yeah, I don't mind Joe's voice, and his misanalysis of baseball is generally entertaining. It doesn't make him a moron ... just a baseball moron. Does that mean he should actually be fired from his job? Probably not.
Yes, Batting Average w/RISP is a stat ... a mostly useless one, given the small sample size, but a stat nonetheless. And yes, "moving runners along" is rather simple to catalog. But damnit, we cannot measure "heart". If we could, Joe Morgan's favorite players would surely be in the neighborhood of .400 EEU (Eckstein/Erstad Units).
I have nothing to add but I love listening to these conversations... ;-)
