I'm not sure what the ultimate lesson is supposed to be here, but Calvin comes up a lot in this apparent free association exercise.
Quoted: InterOil doesn’t have Enron’s political juice, but it does have some notable ties to the Bush Administration through one of its key investors and directors, Gaylen Byker.
Also, lots of interesting links to articles on Bush's last Calvin visit.

A redot from Mel I am very proud to share with those who didn't catch it already.
Quoted: Dianne Slager, a nurse practitioner who has taught at Calvin for three years, will use the Nagel funds to travel to Liberia in late May of 2008 to assess knowledge and attitudes about HIV/AIDS among church leaders and to evaluate the HIV/AIDS information programs they offer.

Hmm...maybe schools should be paying for more than these guys' educations. Big Ten football = Big $$.
Quoted: Super Bowl XL in Detroit was a landmark economic event in 2006, but how big is the Big Ten? A study released Monday shows Big Ten football will pump $177 million into the state economy this fall, more than triple the impact of the Super Bowl.

In response to Derek's recent dot:
Quoted: With demand growing for M.B.A. graduates, it is a seller's market out there, making it tough for many companies to meet hiring quotas using old tried-and-true recruiting methods. At a time when career opportunities are so plentiful that students can afford to turn down even six-figure offers from investment banks, it is especially difficult for traditional manufacturers to make an impression.
Looks like I should have gone for a joint JD/MBA... I could be making big dollars in the dishwasher biz. Oh wait, I applied there and didn't get past the phone interview...guess that sarcasm was unwarranted.

Really cool story. I'll try to dot the Sportscenter feature soon - it didn't mention the hostility part, which the city disputes. The movie rights to the Fugees story sold a few days after this story ran.
Quoted: A boys soccer team for refugees with miserable pasts brings out the best and worst in Americans.

This is obviously not a good time to find money for the project, but hopefully the State will take steps to create a university in Macomb County.
Quoted: Macomb is one of three U.S. counties with a population of at least 840,000 that has no public institution that awards 4-year degrees.

You must be Drew's friend before you can comment on this Fave. This makes me very uneasy:
With the exception of literally a handful of people I met at Calvin, most important being Slager, I'm not sure I'd make the same college choice knowing what I know now. If I could go back in time and have a conversation with the 17 year-old Kruse, I might tell her to go to U of M instead. I try to talk around the exact name of my alma mater these days when it comes up. Though there is a large liberal population of professors and students at Calvin, the world will always see it as very conservative, I'm afraid. Oh well, at least I signed the protest ad.
Well in some ways the invitation and controversy might have alleviated that impression. Most of the world hadn't heard of the school before he came, and just about every story mentioned that he wasn't entirely welcome. I thought Calvin and its liberals came out of the whole thing okay. The one person who suffered most with the whole thing was Gaylen, who lost A LOT of idiot donors and stammered through his introduction of his crush.
yeah, and I think that there are some really good Calvin representatives out there who have the potential to effect Calvin in the future and are even starting to effect it now. I'd add to the list: Emily Venn, Ben Alsdurf, Jason Fileta, Christy Bockheim and I think the list goes on. I worry too about Calvin losing it's cerebral, thoughtful tradition as the Princes and DeVos attempt to build and endow their way to a conservative Calvin, but I think the professors hold strong.

John, I'd put you at the top of the recent grads list, even if you're not allowed to educate Knights about your current role.
Just wow. I don't regret going to Calvin (Chimes, lots of great classes, the Kruse), but I hate it when the top brass decides to paint a picture of the college with their own personal persuasions just because they can.
Agreed. Ah, what I wouldn't do for another chance at the Chimes office with my brow be-studed partner in crizime!
I miss that ring. Darn infection. Of course, now with a baby... ouch.
