Oh, insurance companies. Enjoy those premiums we've been paying all those years! We won't miss this house or our ability to get credit that much anyway...
Quoted: James and Maria Ivory's dreams of a relaxing retirement on Florida's Gulf Coast were put on hold when they discovered their new home had been built with Chinese drywall that emits sulfuric fumes and corrodes pipes. It got worse when they asked their insurer for help — and not only was their claim denied, but they've been told their entire policy won't be renewed.

Put Al Gore on the Supreme Court says Hendrik Hertzberg. As he admits, it isn't going to happen. But after reading this I have to think that Jennifer Granholm is a strong candidate. She's lacking in some departments, but she's barely 50 and she's not a judge.
Quoted: The heart of a Justice’s job is interpreting and applying the Constitution, and for that things like a knowledge of history (including Constitutional history), a feel for the workings of government, a strong moral sense, an ability to think and write clearly, and a temperamental affinity for the long view—all of which Gore has in spades—are much more important than a professional familiarity with the details of contract or case law.

Quoted: [The right] went along with Bush's $700 billion bailout of Wall Street and incinerated its populist pitchfork. Even those who opposed the bank bailout, like Santelli, did so pretty tamely. Santelli never called John McCain Fidel Castro for supporting the bank bailout: In fact, as Santelli told Chris Matthews, he voted for McCain. Oddly, the right only becomes truly apoplectic when individual "losers" are involved, not enormous institutions. Its principles become mysteriously squishy when the engines of advanced capitalism are involved.

Ron Gettelfinger profile in BusinessWeek.
Quoted: Three years ago, the automakers were in trouble, and he knew that without concessions there would be no jobs for his members to report to. When Detroit came looking for givebacks, Gettelfinger ultimately agreed to a contract that set back starting factory wages 30 years: New hires will begin at $14 an hour—half the wage for veterans and a pay scale not seen since the '70s.

A campaign is no time for a reality check, but here it is anyway. McCain wants to redistribute my meager wealth to the military.
Quoted: While both presidential candidates enter the campaign’s final week promising to be the better fiscal steward, each has outlined tax and spending proposals that would make annual budget deficits worse, analysts say, with Senator John McCain likely to create a deeper hole than Senator Barack Obama would.

Liz and I are totally hooked on HBO's John Adams miniseries. This is a great site for satisfying curiosity about his and other presidencies.
Quoted: The American Presidency Project contains the most comprehensive collection of resources pertaining to the study of the President of the United States. Compiled by John Woolley and Gerhard Peters at the University of California.

Calvin Prof. Doug Howard cited in an article about supposed Muslim-terrorists-turned-Christians out on the public speaking tour. They spoke at the AFA yesterday and at Calvin in November.
Quoted: Mr. Howard said his doubts about their authenticity grew after stories like the Golan Heights saga as well as something on Mr. Saleem’s Web site along the lines that he was descended from the grand wazir of Islam. “The grand wazir of Islam is a nonsensical term,” Mr. Howard said.

Quoted: History will remember the 2008 Dennis Kucinich campaign for two things: his hot wife Elizabeth, and bringing UFOs back into the political dialogue.
Quoted: Especially after the attacks of 9/11, it is no longer satisfactory to ignore radar returns … which cannot be associated with performances of existing aircraft and helicopters,” they said in a statement released at a news conference.
